The Uttar Pradesh Skill Development Mission (UPSDM) has introduced a comprehensive co-curricular activity calendar for residential skill training centres operating under the Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Grameen Kaushalya Yojana (DDU-GKY). The initiative aims to ensure that trainees not only receive job-role-specific technical training but also develop personality, communication, leadership, digital awareness, health consciousness, and career-readiness skills throughout the year.
The new calendar is designed around the idea of grooming youth with one key skill or developmental theme every month. It will bring structured activities such as yoga, sports, cyber security awareness, digital literacy, entrepreneurship workshops, cultural programmes, career counselling, group discussions, mock interviews, public speaking competitions, resume writing sessions, and social awareness drives into the regular training ecosystem.
As part of the initiative, UPSDM has directed Project Implementing Agencies (PIAs) to establish six trainee-led clubs at all residential skill training centres. These clubs include the Cultural Club, Sports and Fitness Club, Digital and IT Club, Literature and Language Club, Environment and Social Awareness Club, and Entrepreneurship and Career Development Club.
Each club will have a minimum of five trainees, with the participation of at least two female trainees made compulsory. This provision is expected to promote inclusive participation, leadership development, teamwork, and confidence-building among women trainees enrolled in skill development programmes.
Focus on Holistic Skill Development
Minister for Vocational Education, Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, Kapil Dev Aggarwal, said that the annual calendar will include various national and international days, cultural events, sports competitions, entrepreneurship sessions, digital literacy programmes, and career-oriented activities throughout the year.
The initiative marks an important shift from conventional training delivery to a more holistic model of skilling. While technical training remains the core focus of skill development centres, UPSDM’s calendar aims to prepare trainees for the broader demands of the workplace, including self-presentation, teamwork, discipline, confidence, problem-solving, and communication.
Monthly Calendar of Activities
The calendar will begin in January with activities around National Youth Day, Republic Day, and career counselling sessions. February will focus on cultural festivals and entrepreneurship workshops, while March will include Women’s Day celebrations and annual award ceremonies.
In April, activities will be organised around Earth Day, talent hunts, self-introduction competitions, and Ambedkar Jayanti. June has been dedicated to the theme of health and wellness, with activities expected to promote physical fitness, mental well-being, and healthy lifestyles among trainees.
July will focus on group discussions, mock interviews, and public speaking competitions to improve communication and employability skills. August will include Independence Day celebrations, rangoli competitions, and Raksha Bandhan-based cultural events.
September will promote Teachers’ Day, Hindi Day, and literary activities. October will include Gandhi Jayanti, cleanliness drives, voluntary labour campaigns, and cyber security workshops. November will focus on Constitution Day, quizzes, and sports competitions, while December will include English speaking week, digital literacy activities, and resume writing sessions to help youth prepare for employment opportunities.
Preparing Rural Youth for the Modern Workplace
UPSDM Director Pulkit Khare said the activities are aimed at making rural youth not only technically skilled but also confident, articulate, and leadership-oriented individuals suited to the needs of the modern corporate world.
The initiative is particularly significant for rural youth enrolled in residential training centres, where structured co-curricular exposure can help bridge gaps in communication, confidence, digital understanding, and workplace behaviour. By integrating these activities into the annual training calendar, UPSDM aims to strengthen the employability outcomes of trainees and improve their readiness for placement and long-term career growth.
Six Clubs to Strengthen Participation and Leadership
The six clubs proposed under the calendar are expected to provide trainees with regular platforms to participate, lead, organise, and collaborate. The Cultural Club will promote creativity and cultural expression, while the Sports and Fitness Club will encourage health, discipline, and teamwork.
The Digital and IT Club will help trainees improve digital literacy and cyber awareness. The Literature and Language Club will support reading, writing, communication, and language development. The Environment and Social Awareness Club will sensitise trainees to social responsibility and sustainability, while the Entrepreneurship and Career Development Club will guide youth on self-employment, employability, interviews, and career planning.
A Step Towards Employability-Centred Skilling
The co-curricular calendar reflects the growing recognition that employment readiness requires more than technical certification. Employers increasingly look for candidates who can communicate effectively, work in teams, adapt to workplace culture, demonstrate confidence, and use digital tools efficiently.
By introducing a structured annual calendar, UPSDM is seeking to create a more vibrant and outcome-oriented training environment across residential centres. The model is expected to support personality development, gender-inclusive participation, leadership exposure, and stronger placement preparedness among trainees.
The move also aligns with the broader objective of skill development programmes such as DDU-GKY, which focus on empowering rural youth through training, certification, and placement-linked opportunities.
