A disturbing workplace incident from Bhilai in Chhattisgarh’s Durg district has triggered public debate over employee safety, harassment complaints, internal grievance redressal systems, and the need for timely workplace accountability.

According to media reports, a woman employee of a Maruti Suzuki showroom allegedly confronted a senior official after accusing him of harassment, inappropriate remarks, and sending obscene messages. The incident, reportedly captured on video, shows the woman throwing ink at the official and slapping him in the presence of police personnel. The incident is said to have taken place on May 22 at Chauhan Automobiles in Bhilai.

Reports identified the accused senior official as Ankit Anand, described in different reports as the General Manager/CEO of the showroom. The woman employee reportedly filed a written complaint alleging repeated harassment. Police reached the showroom after the complaint, following which the confrontation took place.

The matter gained wider attention after the video circulated on social media. Media reports citing police officials said that after the woman’s complaint came to light, three to four other employees also reportedly came forward with similar allegations against the official. Police have launched an investigation, and due to the seriousness of the allegations, the case is reportedly being examined by CSP-level officers.

While the facts of the case are still under investigation, the incident highlights the importance of strong and accessible workplace complaint mechanisms. Under India’s workplace safety framework, complaints of sexual harassment are expected to be addressed through appropriate institutional mechanisms, including Internal Complaints Committees where applicable. The government’s SHe-Box portal also provides a platform for women to register workplace sexual harassment complaints.
