IIT Madras and IIT Kanpur Introduce New Undergraduate Cybersecurity Degree

IIT Madras and IIT Kanpur have jointly introduced India’s first practice-oriented four-year Bachelor of Cybersecurity programme, also known as B.Cyber., beginning from the academic year starting July 2026. The programme has been designed to prepare students for the country’s growing need for highly skilled cybersecurity professionals who can protect India’s expanding digital infrastructure, strategic sectors and cyber ecosystem.

The launch marks an important development in India’s higher education landscape, as cybersecurity is now moving from a specialised postgraduate or certification-based field into a dedicated undergraduate degree pathway. With digital systems becoming central to governance, finance, healthcare, transportation, telecommunications, manufacturing and defence, cybersecurity has emerged as a national priority area.

A Practice-Oriented Model for Real-World Cybersecurity Skills

The B.Cyber. programme focuses strongly on applied learning. According to IIT Madras, the first two years will include academic coursework, while the next two years will involve field deployment in selected government organisations, with possible fellowships. Successful candidates at IIT Madras will receive an IIT Madras bachelor’s degree and alumni status.

IIT Kanpur’s programme is being run by the Wadhwani School of AI and Intelligent Systems. The institute has stated that students will complete the first two years of coursework at IIT Kanpur, followed by two years of internship, primarily at selected government organisations. Candidates completing the programme at IIT Kanpur will receive an IIT Kanpur degree and alumni status.

This model is significant because cybersecurity cannot be learned through theory alone. Students need practical exposure to real systems, live threats, vulnerability assessment, incident response, malware behaviour, secure networks, cloud security and critical infrastructure protection.

Curriculum Designed Around Cyber Defence and Digital Security

The curriculum includes foundational and advanced subjects such as computer systems for cybersecurity, programming, Linux system administration, cryptography, ethical hacking, computer networks, web technologies and security, vulnerability assessment and penetration testing. In the advanced semesters, students will work on field deployment projects in areas such as security operations, offensive security, secure systems, malware analysis, firmware reverse engineering, critical infrastructure security, hardware security and cloud security.

IIT Kanpur has also highlighted that the learning experience will include rigorous academic training, extensive hands-on laboratory work and a two-year internship component aimed at giving students real-world exposure to cybersecurity challenges.

Addressing India’s Cybersecurity Talent Gap

India’s digital economy is expanding rapidly, but the availability of trained cybersecurity professionals remains a major challenge. Industry estimates cited by reports indicate a shortage of nearly 1.5 million cybersecurity professionals in the country, underlining the urgent need for structured degree programmes in this field.

The new undergraduate programme is expected to help create a specialised talent pipeline for cyber defence, security operations centres, penetration testing, vulnerability assessment, digital forensics, malware analysis, cloud security, hardware security and critical infrastructure protection.

Admission and Selection Process

For the 2026 admission cycle, IIT Kanpur conducted the selection process through an initial screening based on JEE Main scores and evidence of prior cybersecurity work, followed by an in-person assessment including a hackathon. IIT Kanpur clarified that admission to the programme is not through JEE Advanced.

IIT Madras has stated that admissions for the current year will be conducted along with IIT Kanpur’s selection process, and selected candidates will have the option to choose either IIT Madras or IIT Kanpur.
