Amritsar, Punjab | July 2026:
The Viksit Bharat Young Leaders Dialogue 2026 – Young Professionals Roundtable placed the spotlight on doctors’ well-being, fitness, nutrition, mental health and the role of youth in nation-building. The programme was organised by the United Doctors Front (UDF) in collaboration with the Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports at Government Medical College, Amritsar, on the occasion of National Doctors’ Day.
The dialogue was held under the theme “Fit Bharat – Hit Bharat”, bringing together doctors, medical students, healthcare professionals, administrators and youth representatives to deliberate on healthcare challenges and the importance of a healthier, more active India.
Focus on Doctors’ Working Conditions and Mental Health
A major part of the discussion focused on the demanding working conditions faced by doctors, especially resident doctors. Participants raised concerns over long duty hours, continuous shifts and limited recovery time, noting that these factors can affect the mental health, physical well-being and overall efficiency of medical professionals.
Speakers observed that the healthcare system can only be strengthened when doctors and frontline medical workers receive adequate support, recognition and practical institutional measures. The discussions underlined that patient care and doctors’ welfare are closely connected, and improving work environments for medical professionals is essential for quality healthcare delivery.
Fitness, Nutrition and Work-Life Balance Discussed
The roundtable also highlighted the need for doctors, medical students and young professionals to prioritise fitness, balanced nutrition and work-life balance despite demanding schedules. Participants emphasised that regular physical activity and healthy lifestyle practices should become part of daily routines, particularly for professionals working in high-pressure sectors like healthcare.
The programme encouraged young people to view fitness not only as a personal goal but also as a national development priority. Speakers noted that a physically and mentally healthy youth population can contribute more effectively to the vision of Viksit Bharat.
Punjab Governor Attends as Chief Guest
Punjab Governor Gulab Chand Kataria attended the programme as the chief guest. Brigadier Harcharan Singh (VSM), Arjuna Awardee, Olympian and Hockey World Cup winner, was present as the guest of honour.
The roundtable was chaired by Dr Lakshya Mittal, Chairperson of the United Doctors Front, and moderated by Dr Simar S. Kullar, UDF Punjab Coordinator. Faculty members from Government Medical College, Amritsar, along with Gursevak S. Brar (PPS), Additional Inspector General (Intelligence), Punjab, were also present during the event.
UDF Calls for Practical Solutions for Doctors’ Welfare
Addressing the gathering, Dr Lakshya Mittal said that Doctors’ Day should not only be an occasion to honour medical professionals but also a moment to reflect on the real challenges they face every day.
He said that long working hours and mental stress among doctors directly affect the delivery of quality healthcare services. He added that supporting doctors is necessary for building a healthier Bharat.
Dr Mittal also encouraged healthcare professionals and citizens to adopt fitness, good nutrition and sports as part of their everyday lives, stating that a healthy nation can only be built by healthy individuals.
Drug-Free Bharat and Organ Donation Campaigns Launched
During the event, the United Doctors Front launched two public awareness campaigns.
The first campaign, Drug Free Bharat Campaign, aimed to create awareness against substance abuse and highlighted the National De-addiction Helpline 14446.
The second campaign, “The Gift of Life”, focused on encouraging organ donation and creating awareness about the role of the National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organization (NOTTO).
These campaigns were positioned as youth-led public health initiatives aligned with the broader vision of building a responsible, aware and healthier society.
